Bluntly put – people who are close-minded miss out on a lot, especially when there is a plentiful amount of music out there to be exposed by your own ears. Rather than playing the same artist, the same songs and the same genre, try to explore different areas of music without being stubborn. Let your mind freely analyse the music and if you legitimately don’t like the music, then turn it off. But, NEVER condemn the entire genre just because of one song or one sub-genre.
Once you open your mind for one thing in particular, you can’t help it but to open your mind even more. Your mind starts to feel good when you don’t limit it, so don’t force yourself to block other genres of music; this can obviously cause a lot of stress and anxiety in the future if you allow this to continue.
Here is a quote of mine that I want you to remember, – 'If you are generally nice and open-minded, you can make friends with anyone’. And, I stand by that quote strongly. If you have a wider range of interests in music and many other things, then you have a better chance of becoming friends or even acquainted with anyone because you will always have a topic to talk about.
Appreciate Different Styles
Listening to multiple genres of music will allow you to appreciate the uniqueness of its own styles such as the elements used, creativity in melodies and et cetera. If one wants to appreciate music, then one should listen to all kinds of music. Boredom is extremely tiresome and dull; it often develops from doing the same activity repetitively, the same applies to music. After a while, listening to the same genre will bore you mentally and socially.
So, you think you know everything that you ought to know about reggae or R&B, why not switch to something like rock; or perhaps rap? How about electronic music or orchestral? Or maybe start listening to opera? Many different genres and sub-genres of music are produced differently, they have different elements in its songs and many of the musicians come from different backgrounds – so, why not learn more? Knowledge is power!
Broadens Understanding of Music from Various Cultures
Just because you’re ‘white’, it doesn’t mean you have to only listen to rock or pop as the stereotypical media suggests. Just because you are ‘black’, it doesn’t mean you have to listen to hip hop music or reggae, once again, as the media and modern society stereotypical suggests. Listening to music from various cultural and ethnic backgrounds will benefit your appreciation of the human species and how unique we seem from our fellow animals that roam the planet when it comes to creativity. Just to clarify, all animals are unique in their own way.
Open-mindedness does raise your self-esteem. It gives you something to feel good about and something to respect yourself for. You can have an interest in different genres of music and individuals will appreciate you simply because you are being yourself. Stand tall and be proud of how you can appreciate all kinds of music as well as many other brilliant characteristics you obtain.
